Morrison Madness: The Finals

It's taken nearly three weeks but we're here: the MORRISON MADNESS FINALS!!!

From a field of thirty-two potential winners, you've narrowed the field down to two worthy contenders:

ANIMAL MAN (1998) Morrison's groundbreaking pre-Vertigo series. Animal Man started as an ambitious new take on superheroics and quickly developed into a work focusing on the role of a man as father and as a superhero. Animal Man also became known for breaking "the fourth wall" and for its decidedly strong stance on animal rights. This was many Americans first look into the mind of Grant Morrison and Animal Man was one of a small number of seminal works that laid the groundwork for what would eventually become the Vertigo imprint.

ALL-STAR SUPERMAN (2005) Viewed by many as the single most important Superman since Alan Moore's "Whatever Happened To The Man Of Tomorrow." This was Morrison's attempt to strip Superman down to its timeless and most essential elements without being hampered by DC Comics continuity. Morrison's run focused on what makes Superman, Superman, providing new ways to look at such tried-and-true characters as Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen and even Doomsday. It was done with his longtime creative collaborator, artist Frank Quitely.

And there are your choices...

GO.

Come back tomorrow for the results and some thoughts.

Is It Me Or...

Has Rodney Ramos' name above or beside the "INKER" credit become shorthand for "this DC Comics was running late?"

Does anyone feel like a Green Lantern movie could be bigger than Iron Man?

Am I the only one who think Green Lantern Corps is better than Green Latern?

Wondering why you would cancel Black Panther, Exiles and She-Hulk simply to re-launch within weeks of their cancellations?

Am I the only one who looks at Winick/Benes' Batman start as a perfect "jumping-off" point?

Morrison Madness!!!

Even when Grant Morrison fails, he does it spectacularly.

He's easily one of comics' most important visionaries. Whether it's returning once-stagnant franchises such as JLA, All-Star Superman or The X-Men to prominence, re-defining worlds (Final Crisis, Marvel Boy, 52,) helping us remember forgotten heroes (Doom Patrol, Animal Man) or creating worlds of his own (We3, Invisibles,) no one has done more solid, thought-provoking works than this man.

He will have his place in history.

Despite of all this, he's rarely spoken of with the reverence of his contemporaries, Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman.

Moore has his Swamp Thing, his Watchmen.

Gaiman, his Sandman and his novels.

Morrison has his works, all great and true but this question has always plagued me:

Why isn't Morrison's work held up in these regards?

And then, it dawned on me:

Due to the scope of this man's body of work, it's hard to define exactly what is Morrison's best work.

What is truly is Morrison's Watchmen, his Sandman?

Well, never let it be said that the men of Second Printing don't enjoy a challenge as today, we bring you: MORRISON MADNESS!!!

We dare ask the question, "What exactly is Grant Morrison's defining work," with 32 of our favorite and his more famous works as entries and divided into four interesting brackets.

The ALT/PUNK DIVISION consisting mostly of his own works and works with an air of early 80's cacophony at their core.

The EARLY SUPERHERO DIVISION consisting mostly of his earliest, lesser-known "superhero" works.

The META DIVISION consisting mostly of his "bigger" works that reflect on the genre in which he serves.

The LATE SUPERHERO DIVISION, the natural progression of the "Early" and "Meta" divisions.

There will be only one.

The choice will be yours.
Voting begins tomorrow!

Madness, I Say...

Sorry about the lack of posts here this week.

Mike, Graig and I have been working on something.

Something big.

Something so big that when we put it on the table, women will swoon and men will feel inadequate.

Yes. It's that big.

That's how we roll.

In the meantime, go over here to see what Graig and I thought of some of your favorite comics.

"Meanwhile, evil wears a mustache..."
